Ilayathalapathy Vijay-starrer “Theri” has continued its strong performance at the box office in overseas centres. The movie has made record-breaking collections by crossing $1-million mark in the U.S. and Canada.
The successful performance of “Theri” in Canada has especially brought cheer to everyone associated with the venture. Till Thursday, it had minted $329,084 from the country, according to Taran Adarsh. This makes the movie the fourth highest grosser in Canada.
Rajinikanth’s “Sivaji” is said to occupy the first place in the list of highest-grossing Tamil movies in Canada. It had minted Rs. $499,831 when it was released in 2007, as per Tamilboxoffice1. Another movie of the superstar, “Endhiran,” takes the second position with its collection figure of $472,412, and is followed by Vikram’s hit film of last-year, “I,” which had collected $455,709.
Now, “Theri,” with its business of $329,084 till Thursday, is in the fourth place. There is a strong possibility of the Tamil movie breaking the records of “Sivaji,” “Endhiran” and “I.” It is likely to surpass these records by the end of this weekend.
However, the box office collections from theatres in Canada are often based on the best available data, and do not always include the collections made at all centres. Hence, there is a belief that despite successful performances, many films have failed to get featured in the list of highest-grossing Tamil movies in Canada.
Atmus Entertainment tweets, “#Kaththi Canada numbers not reported, if reported that would have been first MillionDollar North America gross for Vijay. If at all we can get Canada numbers reported properly, we would have had many other Tamil films as $1M North America. [sic]”
Meanwhile, “Theri” has done well at the domestic box office. The movie has crossed the Rs. 50-crore mark in Tamil Nadu and has grossed over Rs. 100 crore worldwide. However, this weekend remains crucial for the film’s success at the collection centres.
