Salman Khan’s resume sure boasts of mindless actioners, but it looks like he is warming up to the idea of doing meaningful cinema. Sources say he has not shown any interest in projects from down south.

“Salman gets a lot of offers for South remakes and action films but right now he is not keen on taking those up. He wants to do films with a message. Also he cannot give so many dates in bulk and action films require that,” the Asian Age quoted a source as saying.

A host of filmmakers and producers are in line, hoping to get the superstar’s dates. But Salman isn’t ready to block a chunk of his calendar. “There are a lot of directors and producers waiting to work with him, but Salman cannot work for 100 to 150 days at a stretch on one project. He’s only doing it for Sultan as he had committed to it a long time ago,” the insider added.

As far as working on “films with a message” is concerned, “Sultan” sounds like a perfect start. Based on the life and times of a wrestler from Haryana, the Ali Abbas Zafar directorial is a love story laced with raw action. “Ours is a sports film but there is action, there is a love story. There is no negative force.. He just has opponents,” he had told the Press Trust of India last year.

Salman has trained in mixed martial arts and he has apparently not touched alcohol ever since he began shooting for the film. To look the part, he had to pile on 15 kgs. While speaking to DNA last year, he had said he strictly followed a protein-rich diet.

Anushka Sharma, who plays Salman’s love interest in the film, also underwent extensive training for six weeks. Reports suggest that she practiced fight moves with real wrestlers as well so that she could master their body language.

Scheduled for an Eid release, “Sultan” may clash with Shah Rukh Khan’s “Raees.”
