In today’s time, films are removed from the theatres if they fail to set the cash registers ringing, but Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol’s “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” has been running at Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir for over two decades now. Fans have called it “evergreen.”

Based on the results of an online survey by SoGoSurvey, the cult film is the most-liked story even today and people are still smitten by it.

According to a BollywoodLife report, 47.33 percent of a sample size of 4,100 across the cities of Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad and more, tagged “DDLJ” as the “most evergreen Bollywood love story.” Making the numbers interesting, the web portal reported that 62 percent of people within the age bracket of 36 to 50 years agreed to it.

“DDLJ” follows the story of two Britain-raised youngsters, Raj (SRK) and Simran (Kajol), who set out on a trip across Europe. They develop a friendship over time and realise their feelings for one another when they part at the end of their journey. Later, Raj jets off to Punjab, where Simran is engaged to Kuljeet Singh (Parmeet Sethi).

Directed by Aditya Chopra, the film saw a handful of stellar performances by its supporting cast — Anupam Kher (Raj’s father – Dharamvir Malhotra), Amrish Puri (Simran’s father – Chaudhary Baldev Singh), Farida Jalal (Simran’s mother – Lajjo), Pooja Ruparel (Simran’s sister – Chutki), and Mandira Bedi (Parmeet’s sister – Preeti).

The other Bollywood films, which lost out to the “evergreen” tag, are: Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor’s “Aashiqui 2” with 14.66 percent, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s epic love story “Bajirao Mastani” managed a mere 11.99 percent despite being a rage last year, Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt’s “2 States” stood at 5.84 percent, Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan’s endearing journey in “Jab We Met” scored 5.35 percent, and SRK and Preity Zinta’s “Veer Zaara” finished with a 5.08.
