The first half of Marvel’s “Agents of SHIELD” Season 3 consisted of numerous shocking and unexpected incidents that left fans flabbergasted. Now, it seems the show is going to be much darker and grim once it returns in March after mid-season break.
In the mid-season finale episode titled “Maveth”, Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) managed to kill Grant Ward (Brett Dalton). However, a mysterious alien inhabited Ward’s body and returned to Earth with Coulson and Fitz.
The incident was undoubtedly a turning point in Coulson’s life as Ward used to be one of his favourite team-members once. Though he was initially reluctant to kill him, Coulson was left with no other option and had to brutally murder Ward. It is surely going to affect him psychologically.
Neither Coulson nor any of his team-members know about Ward’s return, and even if they find it eventually, they will have a hard time with the alien possessing Ward’s body now.
In an interview with IGN, some of the cast and creators of “Agents of SHIELD” talked about the show’s future and how the return of a dead Ward would lead to future events.
“What I know so far, it looks like the biggest possible effect, because it works on two levels,” Gregg said.
“On the one hand, it means Coulson having crossed a line that I think he takes very seriously, which is, ‘If you’re trying to protect the world from evil and you then become evil, haven’t you become part of the problem?’ That’s a little bit what’s going on for him, even though I don’t think that the answer’s cut-and-dry in this case.”
The creator of the show, Joss Whedon, said: “One of the things about a director is he has to keep working. He has to present that nothing’s wrong. Initially we won’t necessarily know how much that has affected him. He definitely crossed a line and he knows this.”
It is not yet clear how the story will develop in the future episodes, but it is undoubtedly going to emphasise on Coulson’s guilt and the events related to Ward’s return.
