Despite being opened to a mixed response, Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s latest Malayalam movie “Theri” has performed well at the Kerala box office on its opening day, Thursday, April 14. The movie was screened with houseful shows in almost all the theatres in the South Indian state.

Atlee Kumar’s directorial venture has reportedly made a gross collection of approximately Rs. 3.16 crore on its release day from more than 180 screens in Kerala. “#Theri Kerala Gross 3.16 cr 2nd Biggest Kerala Grosser – Day 1,” tweeted Malayalam review. The movie has now become the second highest opening day grosser in Kerala after Vikram “I” (Rs. 3.19 crore). The Vijay starrer is expected to rock the theatres in Kerala during the weekend too as the actor enjoys a huge fan following in the state.

The release dates of few other movies, ealier scheduled for Vishu, were reportedly postponed due to the big release of “Theri,” considering the actor’s popularity throughout the state.

“Theri” has been distributed in Kerala by popular production house Friday Film House in association with Carnival Pictures. The company, owned by actors Vijay Babu and Sandra Thomas, is said to have bagged the theatrical rights of the flick for a whopping amount and is rumoured to be Rs. 5.6 crore.

“Theri,” starring Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Amy Jackson and baby Nainika in main roles, did tremendous business in Tamil Nadu as well upon its release in 425 screens in the state. The movie is said to have minted an approximate amount of Rs. 13.1 crore in the state, becoming the highest opening day collection of the actor till date. The movie has reportedly earned $211,424 from premiere shows at the U.S. box office.
