The tax liability case, which the Supreme Court asked the Income-Tax department on Wednesday to reopen, was not related to the television show “Kaun Banega Crorepati,” Press Trust of India quoted the chartered accountants and the legal advisory team of the actor as saying in a statement.

The I-T department had appealed to the Supreme Court, saying it need to reassess Bachchan’s tax  paid for his earning from the television show during the fiscal year 2001-02. The I-T department had said the actor still has to pay Rs. 1.66 crore in taxes. The apex court reportedly allowed the I-T department to reopen the case.

Bachchan’s legal team, however, said the case has not been reopened and that the actor has the right to file a petition against Supreme Court’s reassessment.

They also said: “The mentioned case has no relation to KBC (Kaun Banega Crorepati) whatsoever in any matter or context. The mentioned case has not been reopened. The Supreme Court has given the respondent, i.e. Mr Amitabh Bachchan, the right to appeal against the re-assessment order.”

The Supreme Court had issued the orders on Wednesday after setting aside the Bombay High Court’s July 2012 ruling.

The Bombay High Court had dismissed the Income Tax Commissioner’s plea to repoen the tax liability case, following which the department had approached the Supreme Court.
