National Award-winning musician Gopi Sunder is one of the leading composers in the Malayalam industry these days, having worked independently in nearly 100 movies since 2006. However, netizens often refer him as a copycat, saying he lifts tunes from English, Hindi and Tamil movies.
Soon after the trailer of Dulquer Salmaan’s upcoming movie “Kali” was released, social media users were quick to accuse the musician of copying the background score of the trailer from the English movie “The Man from U.N.C.L.E,” released in 2015. Gopi has now admitted to having been “inspired” by the background score of the Hollywood movie, and added he had made slight changes before it was used in the trailer of “Kali.”
“I had intentionally used the sound track of ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E.’ with slight changes for the trailer of ‘Kali.’ The background score of the movie is completely different and the two songs of the movie have already become the favourite of many. I have always tried to come up with different music and background score. After each songs, the audience are eagerly awaiting the next. I sometimes take inspiration from some popular songs, so my songs will also get similar popularity,” Gopi told SouthIive.
He also shared a troll message about him on his Facebook page, praising the person who came up with it. “I liked your creativity. I respect that. Classic,” wrote Gopi. The meme by Raihan Faris was initially shared on the troll Facebook page International Chalu Union.
The musician was earlier accused of copying the tunes for his hit songs “Olanjali Kuruvi,” “Eeran Kaatin,” “Kaal Kuzhanju” and “Kannum Chimmi,” among others. ‘Kali’ trailer breaks the record of ‘Charlie’ in 22 hours
