After being part of a romantic-comedies, Udhayanidhi Stalin surprisingly moved on to crime-thriller “Gethu”, which is written and directed by Thiru Kumaran of “Maan Karate” fame. The movie has Amy Jackson in the female lead role and Sathyaraj has a powerful character in the flick.
Udhayanidhi Stalin has decided to go for a image makeover with “Gethu”. All his three films as hero were light-hearted entertainers and he was not the selling point and Santhanam was the backbone. With his latest film, he has not only ventured into serious films but also trying to prove that he is taking acting career seriously.
Vikranth, who had won the hearts of the audience with his performance in Vishal starrer “Pandia Nadu”, will be seen in the role of a villain in “Gethu”. Amy Jackson plays Stalin’s love interest and a good portion of the first half revolves around them. Sathyaraj plays the character of the hero’s father with Karunas, Avinash, Anuradha and others doing the supporting roles.
Harris Jayaraj, who had composed music for all Udhayanidhi Stalin’s films, has continued his succesful association, Sukumar has handled the cinematography and Dinesh Ponraj is the editor of “Gethu”.
Udhayanidhi Stalin plays the role of a librarian named Sethu. His father played by Sathyaraj does not share good relationship with a wine shop owner. To everybody’s surprise, the bar owner suspiciously dies and the cops arrest Sathyaraj in connection with the case. Now, the hero wants to prove his father’s innocence and his mission leads to Bull (Vikranth), who aims to kill India’s biggest scientist. The remaining part of the story is about how the Sethu fights the baddie to save his father.

Director Thirukumaran, what’s the obsession with horses and fields?
The first action sequence performed by Udayanidhi almost received an applause at the theatre. Credit to the bgm as well.
But convey the point first. You can package sleek visuals later.
Surendhar MK tweeted: #Gethu is a so-so thriller that doesn’t fulfill its lofty ambitions. Aesthetically appealing live visuals but the writing is quite underfed.
100 Word Reviews posted on Facebook: Director Thirukumaran’s #Gethu is a so-so thriller that doesn’t fulfill its lofty ambitions. The film knocks all eyes out with aesthetically appealing live visuals but the writing is comparatively underfed. The unexciting script hits the skids and the sure-fire way of holding the attention of viewers backfires what could have been a competent thriller. Amy Jackson almost vanishes in the second half, like the major female lead characters in Tamil cinema, but turns up swiftly out of nowhere for songs and to lend her jewelry when the hero is in acute need for money. Sukumar’s strong sense of visual pattern and Harris Jayaraj’s occasionally good background score don’t succeed in bundling up an engaging thriller.
We are going with 2.5 stars out of 5
Cineulagam posted: #Gethu @iamAmyJackson character uses fr comedy track.. Usual template fr decade heroines and entertaining some portion’s
Watching #Gethu so far entertaining, @Udhaystalin looks very stylish in this film..
Kannan: #Gethu – Decent suspense thriller that’s visually brilliant but drags a lot & tests one’s patience big time esp. in the second half! (5/10)
Kaushik LM posted: #Gethu 2.75 / 5..Without needless songs & some more conviction, this visually rich 2hrs film could have been solid. Slick but lousy in parts
The better #udhay film among his recent ones. But it is tough to believe him as a librarian taking on a trained sniper
watchable thanks to the superb visuals and locations. #Harris in good form. 2nd half packs good moments. Could have been much better
#Vikranth looks stunning as a sniper. New kind of villain for tamil. His assignment and devious plans are the film’s main angle.
An action film that doesn’t live up to its potential due to a needless heroine track and songs. Decent 2nd half though
1st half – Misplaced songs & a non-happening #AmyJackson track pull it down. Visually grt & good effort by #Harris. Hope it picks up
Christopher Kanagaraj: #Gethu – Avergae! Udhay needs to improve a lot in expressions, amy no scope, vikranth stylish, awesome camera, gud music, not engaging!!!!
Gowthaman Natarajan tweeted: #Gethu- half made it action flick as spice less! #harris music dipped down the movie with RR looked bad!
#thirukumaran story was good by giving hard thought but the unmoving screenplay in the first half and also predictability in 2nd
#sukumar cinematography was eye catchy! The camera angles and lighting was impeccable! Treat to watch!
#Amy was highly irritating in that character! #UdhayanidhiStalin looked solid! He has improvised well and looked gethu in bar fight
A wannabe action flick from #UdhayanidhiStalin looked good in paper but the execution was absolutely devastating!
Sreedhar Pillai posted: #Gethu 2.5/5.Technically slick but story wafer thin & suspense element is missing in a thriller.#Sukumar’s camera, colour & locations fab.
Well choreographed action scene in bar done convincingly by @Udhaystalin. @iamAmyJackson tries 2 pass of as a Tambram girl.
@vikranth_offl as silent villain OK. @Jharrisjayaraj music not up 2 his usual mark. Song placement is jarring.
