The sequel to Disney’s “Frozen” is currently in the works and fans have started an online campaign to make Queen Elsa a lesbian, making her Disney’s first homosexual princess.
The trend gained momentum after Alexis Isabel Moncada tweeted her desire to see Elsa as a lesbian princess. “I hope Disney makes Elsa a lesbian princess imagine how iconic that would be.” She added, “Dear @Disney, #GiveElsaAGirlfriend.”
Soon, a number of people started retweeting her tweet, and Moncada on Tuesday penned an open letter entitled “Why I Created the Trending #GiveElsaAGirlfriend Hashtag.” In the article, published on MTV.com, Moncada noted that she wanted young people to know it was okay for a princess to love another princess.
“Gowing up, I never saw a princess fall in love with another princess — and neither have girls growing up right now,” she wrote. “The entertainment industry has given us girls who have fallen in love with beasts, ogres who fall for humans, and even grown women who love bees. But we’ve never been able to see the purity in a queer relationship.”
Moncada further noted that as a teen still exploring her sexuality, Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl” helped her feel less lonely. And if “Frozen” makes Elsa a lesbian, then it can reach a wider audience.
“Giving young girls the chance to understand that a princess can love another princess the same way Cinderella loved her Prince Charming is vital to their development. No one deserves to feel isolated and confused about who they are. All we need is someone to show us that there are other options, other kinds of princesses, and other ways to have the happy ending that you deserve.”
It remains to be seen if Disney will concede to fans’ demand to make Else a lesbian. Meanwhile, here are a few gems from Twitter on why Disney should consider making Elsa a lesbian.
#GiveElsaAGirlfriend because LGBT kids deserve to know that there is nothing wrong with them

#GiveElsaAGirlfriend because 1 in 5 kids are queer, but only 1 in 10 feel safe enough to come out.
