Dharma Productions’ family drama “Kapoor and Sons,” which was released in 1,500 screens in India, racked up an impressive first-week box office collection. The film has recorded the second highest first-week box office collection of 2016, after “Airlift.”
“Kapoor and Sons” opened in theaters last Friday and began its box office sprint with good numbers. Despite the ongoing World Twenty20 matches and students’ exams in India, the film has been holding well at the collection centers. The film, starring Sidharth Malhotra, Fawad Khan and Alia Bhatt, raked in an impressive Rs 46.93 crore in its seven-day theatrical run.
The first-week box office collection of “Kapoor and Sons” is more than Sonam Kapoor’s “Neerja” (Rs 35.32 crore), thus taking the second spot at the box office this year. The Sidharth, Fawad and Alia-starrer has had a good first-week due to positive reviews and also due to festival holidays. The collection of “Kapoor and Sons” increased Thursday, due to Holi holiday across the country, and Good Friday holiday would show the same trend.
“#KapoorAndSons had a ROCK-STEADY run on weekdays, with the biz on Thu [Holi] being the BEST. Better than Mon, Tue, Wed,” trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, adding: “#KapoorAndSons Fri 6.85 cr, Sat 7.75 cr, Sun 11.75 cr, Mon 5.08 cr, Tue 4.50 cr, Wed 4.35 cr, Thu 6.65 cr. Total: ₹ 46.93 cr. SUPER!”
Dharma Productions’ “Kapoor and Sons” is now the third highest grosser in India. The film also shattered the lifetime box office collection record of Farhan Akhtar-Amitabh Bachchan starrer “Wazir” (Rs 41 crore). “Kapoor and Sons” will soon break “Neerja” lifetime collection record.
“Kapoor and Sons” is a rom-com produced by Karan Johar and also features Rishi Kapoor, Ratna Pathak Shah and Rajat Kapoor in pivotal roles.
